Lemmatization Project

Lemmatization Project

You will engage in a particular form of hyper-close reading (and open scholarship) by lemmatizing and creating a vocabulary for a selection of poems in the Epigrammata of Ludvig Holberg, one of the greatest Neo-Latin authors, renowned especially for this comedies, history, and one of the first best-selling European novels (and a personal favorite, Nicolai Klimii iter subterraneum). Reading Holberg, one of the ultimate manifestations of the Latin epigrammatic tradition, will offer fresh insights on the ancient works we will be reading together. The collective work will then be processed and added to the The Bridge to serve as a resource for all in (and outside) the class when they are reading these poems.

Lemmatization Materials

Holdberg’s Epigrams

  • each tranche runs more or less 100 lines (~500 words), of which 2/3rds or so will have been lemmatized automatically; be sure to audit the automatically lemmatized entries to make sure that they are correct as well
  • Undergraduates should select a single tranche; Graduate Students two. Please try to claim earlier tranches and complete sections and books before claiming tranches in later books, unless you have a compelling personal interest in doing so.
  • You should sign up for a trance in one of the sheets (A or B). Your lemmatization will be validated against a peer (and me) before being made public.
